The Roopkund Lake, also known as Mystery Lake or Skeleton Lake, has remained a mystery for several years. When the ice melts in summer in the glacial Roopkund tarn, it is possible to see hundreds of skeletons floating on the water. This mystery has existed for more than 70 years after a forest guard came across these skeletons and reported the matter to the outside world. These skeletal remains have intrigued scientists, historians, local people, and especially anthropologists. Initially, it was difficult to guess who these people were, what they were doing in the Garhwal region of the Himalayas which are inhospitable, and how they perished. The latest forensic investigation of the 30 skeletons that the team of scientists commissioned by the National Geographic magazine brought back from Roopkund Lake appears to corroborate a local myth about the skeletons.
